Vitamin D Metabolism in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Link Between Bone and Cardiovascular Disease
نویسنده
چکیده
The Journal of Lancaster General Hospital • Winter 2006 • Vol. 1 – No. 3 ABSTRACT Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a complex syndrome with a variety of comorbidities; in patients on hemodialysis, the most common are cardiovascular disease (CVD) and metabolic bone disease (renal osteodystrophy).1 The pathogenesis of renal osteodystrophy involves abnormal vitamin D levels and secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT); the latter may also play a role in the pathogenesis of CVD. Furthermore, recent studies suggest a link between bone disease and vascular calcifi cation, which also increases the risk of cardiovascular complications.

Vitamin D deficiency and stroke
Vitamin D comprises a group of fat-soluble pro-hormones, obtained from sun exposure, food, and supplements, and it must undergo two hydroxylation reactions to be activated in the body. Several studies have shown the role of vitamin D in mineral metabolism regulation, especially calcium, phosphorus, and bone metabolism. Some factors such as inadequate vitamin intake and liver or kidney disorders...
متن کاملVitamin D deficiency in children with Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD) and factors affecting response to cholecalciferol therapy: A quasi-experimental study from low-middle income setting
Background and Objective: Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD) is characterized by hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia and abnormal vitamin D (VD) metabolism resulting in high parathyroid hormone secretion. The objective of the study was to determine VD status in children with CKD-MBD and the effect of cholecalciferol therapy in these children. Methods: This quasi-experimental st...
متن کاملRaising awareness on the therapeutic role of cholecalciferol in CKD: a multidisciplinary-based opinion
Vitamin D is recognized to play an essential role in health and disease. In kidney disease, vitamin D analogs have gained recognition for their involvement and potential therapeutic importance. Nephrologists are aware of the use of oral native vitamin D supplementation, however, uncertainty still exists with regard to the use of this treatment option in chronic kidney disease as well as clinica...
متن کاملVitamin D, the autonomic nervous system, and cardiovascular risk
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and vitamin D deficiency are extremely prevalent worldwide (Holick 2007; World Health Organization 2011). The potential link between vitamin D deficiency and CVD-related death in both healthy and diseased populations is a growing area of translational research. Historically, the traditional role of vitamin D in maintaining calcium homeostasis and mineral metabolism ...

Regarding immune-regulatory roles of vitamin D as well as its effect on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), the present study aimed to evaluate serum vitamin D levels in patients with COPD exacerbation. The study population included 70 patients with COPD exacerbation who were hospitalized in the general ward of an affiliated hospital with Birjand University of Medical Sciences, Birjan...
